Gas Stove Installation Requirements

In Singapore, the installation of gas stoves and gas appliances must comply with the regulations and guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the City Gas or the licensed gas service worker (LGSW) conducting the installation.

Here are the key requirements for gas stove installation in a Singaporean setting:

  1. Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW): Installation must be carried out by a licensed gas service worker (LGSW). The LGSW is trained and certified to ensure that the installation meets safety standards and regulations.

  2. Compliance with Safety Standards: The gas stove and related equipment must comply with Singapore Standards (SS) specified for gas appliances. This includes ensuring that the appliances are suitable for the type of gas used (e.g., town gas or liquefied petroleum gas).

  3. Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is crucial for safety. Installation locations must be well-ventilated to prevent the accumulation of gas fumes. This might involve specific requirements for windows, vents, or exhaust systems.

  4. Gas Supply and Piping: The installation must ensure that the gas piping system is correctly sized, properly laid out, and tested for leaks. The materials and installation methods for the gas piping must adhere to regulatory standards.

  5. Distance and Clearances: There must be sufficient clearance between the gas stove and combustible materials. Specific distances from the stove to overhead cabinets, walls, and other appliances must be maintained as per safety guidelines.

  6. Installation and Use Manual: The gas stove should be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. This includes following the guidelines for the use of regulators, hoses, and connectors.

  7. Inspection and Testing: After installation, the gas service worker must conduct a thorough inspection and testing of the gas stove and connection to ensure there are no leaks and that the appliance is safe to use.

  8. Approval and Notification: Depending on the scope of work, a completion report might need to be submitted to the gas supplier or relevant authorities. In some cases, prior approval before the commencement of installation work might be required.

  9. Regular Maintenance: Owners are advised to engage licensed gas service workers for regular maintenance checks to ensure ongoing safety and compliance.

These requirements are designed to ensure the safe installation and use of gas stoves in Singapore. It's important to check with the EMA, City Gas, or a licensed gas service worker for the most current regulations and guidelines.

Bonus Treat: Bak Kut Teh Recipe For Your Kitchen Hob

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 2-3 hours

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Pork ribs - 1 kg, chopped into pieces

Garlic cloves - 8, whole with skins

Chinese white radish (Daikon) - 1 medium, sliced

Shiitake mushrooms - 6-8, soaked and halved

Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons

Dark soy sauce - 1 tablespoon

White pepper - 1 teaspoon

Salt - to taste

For the Spice Mix (Herbs and Spices):

Dried Chinese Angelica Root (Dang Gui) - 3 slices

Chinese Foxglove Root (Shu Di Huang) - 2 slices

Codonopsis Root (Dang Shen) - 2 sticks

Liquorice Root (Gan Cao) - 1 stick

Astragalus Root (Huang Qi) - 2 sticks

Goji berries - a small handful

Star anise - 2 pieces

Cinnamon stick - 1

Cloves - 4-5

Fennel seeds - 1 teaspoon

White peppercorns - 1 teaspoon

Coriander seeds - 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  • Begin by rinsing the pork ribs under cold water. Next, blanch the ribs in a pot of boiling water for 5-10 minutes to remove impurities. Drain and set aside.
  • Combine all the herbs and spices listed under the spice mix in a cloth bag or a large tea infuser. Secure the bag or close the infuser tightly.
  • In a large pot, add about 2 litres of water along with the spice mix bag. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes to allow the spices to infuse the water with their flavours.
  • Add the blanched pork ribs, garlic cloves, white radish slices, and mushrooms to the simmering broth. Allow it to simmer for 1-1.5 hours or until the pork is tender and the flavours meld beautifully.
  • Add soy sauce, dark soy sauce, white pepper, and salt to the broth. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preference.
  • Once the pork is tender and the broth is aromatic and rich, your Bak Kut Teh is ready to be served. Ladle it into bowls, evenly distributing the pork, mushrooms, and radish.

  • Serving Suggestions: Serve your Bak Kut Teh hot, accompanied by steamed white rice, fried crispy tofu, and a tangy chilli and garlic dip. It is also traditional to serve it with Chinese tea, which complements the flavours wonderfully.

Tips:

  • You can find Chinese herbs and spices in Asian supermarkets or online.
  • Feel free to add more or less spice according to your preference.
