What is Teflon Fabric? - Megafurniture

What is Teflon Fabric?

When you hear about "Teflon,” what comes to mind is the non-stick coating found in non-stick pans and kitchen utensils. But did you know that this teflon material can do more than make your kitchen more efficient?

Whether you are a parent who co-sleeps with your little one, a pet parent who experiences pee accidents regularly, or simply want to keep an easy-to-maintain home, Teflon fabric protection for your mattress can greatly help.

What is Teflon?

Teflon mattress fabric

Teflon is a trade name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or CF2CF2), which is commonly used on fabric to provide a protective coating for different products like fabric. This coating is colourless, odourless, and offers several valuable properties to the fabric, such as water and stain resistance, without altering the look or comfort of the fabric. When applied to textiles such as clothes, bedding, and mattresses, Teflon creates a “durable and invisible shield” that helps repel liquids and prevent stains from setting in.

Despite its smooth surface, Teflon is a tough material with high resistance to abrasion. It can also resist most chemicals like Ozone, Chlorine, NH3, H2So4, and HCL. This makes the fabric easier to clean and enhances its overall longevity.

 Did You Know?

Teflon is used to protect the Statue of Liberty. Teflon has even made its way into space. It was used as a coating on the spacesuits worn by astronauts during the Apollo missions.

What is Teflon Fabric Made of?

Teflon mattress

Teflon fabric is made from a material called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is a type of synthetic fluoropolymer. The name "Teflon" is actually a brand name for PTFE, which was discovered and developed by chemists at DuPont in the 1930s. The production of Teflon fabric involves the careful polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene gas, a process that results in the formation of PTFE. The teflon material is then shaped into various forms, including sheets or coatings, to be used as fabric. Here's a breakdown of what Teflon fabric is made of:

  1. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The primary component of Teflon fabric is PTFE, a high-performance polymer consisting of carbon and fluorine atoms. This polymer is known for its remarkable non-stick properties, high chemical resistance, and thermal stability.
  2. Fluorine Atoms. The strong, stable carbon-fluorine bonds in PTFE contribute to its non-reactive nature. Fluorine atoms surround the carbon backbone, forming a protective shield that resists chemical reactions.
  3. High Molecular Weight. PTFE molecules have a high molecular weight, and they arrange themselves in a way that creates a dense, slippery surface. This unique molecular structure is responsible for Teflon's non-stick characteristics.

How Does Teflon Fabric Protection Work?

  1. Teflon is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. When applied to fabrics, it forms a molecular barrier on the surface that causes liquids to bead up and roll off rather than being absorbed.
  2. Teflon also provides resistance against oil-based stains. The non-stick properties of Teflon make it difficult for oils and greases to adhere to the fabric. This reduces the likelihood of stains and makes the fabric easier to clean.
  3. Teflon creates a durable protective layer on the fabric without altering its texture or appearance. This invisible and non-comfort-altering layer helps to guard against wear and tear and extends the life of the fabric by making it more resistant to abrasion and damage.
  4. Despite repelling liquid and stains, Teflon maintains the breathability of fabric, which makes it good for outdoor wear, mattresses, and bedding accessories.
  5. Fabrics treated with Teflon are often easier to clean and maintain. Stains are less likely to set into the fabric, and dirt can be more easily wiped or rinsed away.

Is Teflon Fabric Safe?

Yes, Teflon fabric is safe for use in various applications, even for clothes and mattresses. While some had concerns with the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during old production practices, manufacturers have phased out this compound for the production of teflon.

Teflon is known for its chemical inertness, meaning it does not easily react with other substances. This property makes it highly stable and safe for use in different environments. It can also withstand temperature changes without releasing harmful fumes. This means that it's safe even in Singapore, where temperatures can be extremely high.

Is Teflon Fabric Durable?

Yes, Teflon fabric is durable. The Teflon coating adds a protective layer to the fabric, making it resistant to stains, water, and general wear and tear. The Teflon treatment not only enhances the fabric's longevity but also makes it easier to clean and maintain. So, if you're looking for a durable and reliable fabric for your mattress, Teflon-coated options are certainly worth considering.

How to Clean Your Teflon Fabric

Luckily, despite its water-resistant properties, Teflon fabric can be washed without any worries. The Teflon coating is designed to withstand washing without losing its effectiveness.

When washing Teflon-coated fabrics, it's advisable to follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Just be sure to avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they may compromise the Teflon's efficiency over time.

When spot-cleaning a Telfon fabric mattress, use a mild detergent or a mixture of water and white vinegar, then gently dab on the affected area. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the Teflon coating.
